How the North Center Street Crash Unfolded

Officers responded to a report of two people on foot hit near Center and Inglewood streets, just before 1 a.m. Police said the women were crossing Center Street when a southbound car struck them. Police said it was dark and rainy and that visibility was limited.

According to police, the driver stopped at the scene and tried to warn other motorists. Police said two more vehicles then arrived and may have hit one of the women. One woman was pronounced dead where the crash happened, and the other later died at a nearby hospital. Their identities have not been released.

What Mesa Police Are Still Working to Learn

Police said the drivers who have been identified were cooperating with investigators. Police said they found no evidence that speed or impairment played a role. Mesa police said investigators are trying to identify a dark-colored sedan that could have been a third vehicle in the crash. Police asked anyone with information to call 480-644-2211.

A hit-and-run case does not close just because time passes. Some are solved months later when someone comes forward or new video surfaces.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Arizona usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
