Two women were killed in a head-on crash on I-40 west of McLean in Gray County.

Two women were killed in a head-on crash on I-40 west of McLean in Gray County, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). Dorothy Guinn, 81, of Pampa, was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-40 around 2 p.m. Sunday when her 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe hit a 2016 Toyota Highlander head-on. Guinn and the driver of the Highlander, Ester Evenson, 60, of Amarillo, were both pronounced dead at the scene. Eastbound I-40 near mile marker 140 was closed because of the crash.‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌

The head-on collision that killed Ester Evenson and Dorothy Guinn is undergoing an intensive investigation, a process critical for understanding why the crash occurred. Such investigations often involve analyzing various factors, including vehicle speeds, driver behavior, and road conditions. The Texas Department of Public Safety will examine the actions taken by both drivers in the moments leading up to the crash. Investigators in head-on collisions typically look at several key pieces of evidence. This can include vehicle damage, tire marks, debris fields, and potential eyewitness accounts. They also review "black box" data from the vehicles, which records critical information like speed, braking, and steering inputs just before impact. The goal is to reconstruct the crash sequence and identify cause. Road design and signage are also often scrutinized in fatal crashes, particularly in those involving wrong-way driving. Stefano Formica, a National Legal Analyst and Of Counsel at Bond Legal, observed that “It’s a tragedy when a road design from decades ago leads to a fatal collision today. Sight distance and road geometry can’t be ignored when investigators look at why a crash happened in the first place.” Wrong-way driving incidents, though less frequent than other crash types, often result in severe or fatal outcomes due to the high-impact forces involved. Factors contributing to these crashes can include impaired driving, driver distraction, and inadequate or confusing signage. Investigators will determine if any of these played a role in the Gray County crash. Obtaining detailed information from the DPS report will be important for the families involved.
