1 Killed, 1 Injured in Des Moines Car Accident
The crash happened Monday morning on E. University Avenue and ended in the parking lot of UnityPoint, Iowa Lutheran Hospital.
A 76-year-old woman was killed in a car crash on E. University Avenue in Des Moines on Monday, according to the Des Moines Police Department.
How the E. University Avenue Crash Unfolded
At about 10:30 a.m., police and fire crews responded to the hospital lot at 700 E. University Avenue. Police said a 2018 Ford Escape had been heading east when it moved across the westbound lanes and left the road. The department said the SUV struck a tree and an unoccupied parked pickup truck, and then caught fire. Police said the pickup was pushed onto Pennsylvania Avenue, where it hit a vehicle heading south.
Bystanders helped pull the 76-year-old driver of the SUV from the vehicle, and she was brought to the nearby hospital. Police said she died despite life-saving efforts. The southbound vehicle's driver was treated for injuries that police described as non-life-threatening.
What the Police Traffic Unit Is Reviewing
Police said investigators are looking at a critical medical episode as a possible factor. The department's Traffic Unit is handling the investigation, and police have released no further information.
Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.

Here is what people in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.
Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.
Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
