The Early Sunday Crash on Old Charlotte Highway

Monroe Police said two of the men, Davor Barisic and Nemanja Ljepojević, died in the crash early Sunday morning. Police said the driver struck some trees and lived. The driver has not been named. A church leader in Charlotte said all three men were parishioners and part of the Serbian community.

Barisic was a local soccer coach with the Porter Ridge Soccer Club. He had two children and had stepped in as assistant coach on his son's team when the head coach needed help. The club's director, Jake Roberts, said Barisic lived out the club's values of courage, commitment and community.

Where the Monroe Police Case Stands

Monroe Police said the driver is still hospitalized in critical condition. Police said the driver could face charges, and none have been announced. A memorial now marks the crash site. Roberts said another coach started a fundraiser for Barisic's family.

When police say a crash is still under investigation, it usually means they are still collecting evidence and have not reached any conclusions.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in North Carolina usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
