Millbury, OhioPublished 2 min read

Three people were injured in a crash involving a car, a tractor-trailer and a construction worker in an active work zone on the westbound Ohio Turnpike near Interstate 280 in Millbury on October 14, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

What Happened in the Work Zone Near I-280

At about 1:36 a.m., a Chevrolet Silverado was pulling into the traffic lane from an active work zone when it was struck by a Volvo tractor-trailer, investigators said. The force of the impact pushed both vehicles into the work area, where they struck a construction worker.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the Silverado's driver as Johnathan Tefft, 23, of Bowling Green, the tractor-trailer's driver as William Manning, 35, of Bedford, and the construction worker as Isaiah Roark, 29, of Parma.

Roark sustained serious injuries and was taken by ground ambulance to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center. Manning sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same hospital. Tefft sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to ProMedica Bay Park Hospital.

Why Pedestrian and Work Zone Crashes Can Turn Severe

According to NHTSA, the U.S. saw 71,635 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes in 2024. A construction worker was on foot in an active work area when struck during a nighttime collision on a major highway. People on foot have no protection against a moving vehicle, and work zones at night add narrow lanes, shifting traffic patterns and reduced visibility that can limit a driver's time to react.

A person on foot has no protection against a moving vehicle, so speed decides survival. A car at 40 mph needs far more room to stop than one at 20, and busy intersections concentrate the risk where turning vehicles and blocked sightlines cut into a driver's reaction time.

Where the Ohio State Highway Patrol Investigation Stands

The crash remains under investigation by the Swanton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. No charges have been announced. The Lake Township Fire Department, Troy Township EMS, Northwood Fire Department, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, and a towing service assisted at the scene.
