The Evening Crash on South California Avenue

Chicago police said a police vehicle with its lights and sirens on collided with another car just before 7 p.m. The police vehicle was a Ford Explorer, and the other car was a dark-colored Honda Accord. Air bags deployed in both vehicles, and both sustained significant damage. The front end of the Explorer was crushed, and the passenger side of the Accord was caved in.

The man driving the Accord and a woman riding with him went to Advocate Christ Medical Center. The man was listed in good condition, and the woman was in fair condition. Two officers had minor injuries and were brought to a nearby hospital, where both were listed in good condition.

What Chicago Police Have Yet to Release

Chicago police have not released further details about the crash. Police have not said which driver was at fault, and no charges have been announced.

Early details about a crash can change as investigators learn more. The first news reports are a starting point, not the final word.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Illinois usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
