Two drivers were injured in a car crash on Route 48 in Mattituck on Wednesday night, according to Southold Town Police.

The Wednesday Night Crash on Route 48

Police said Paris Ahmad, 23, of Brightwaters, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet west near Elijah's Lane when it and a 2018 Ford collided head-on. The other driver, Daniel Melhado, 80, of Southold, was in the Ford. Police said the Ford was traveling east in the westbound lane. A call about the crash came in at 9:04 p.m.

A helicopter flew Melhado to Stony Brook University hospital. An ambulance brought Ahmad to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Southold police Capt. Scott Latham said Melhado had left home around 7 p.m. to pick up Chinese food, and that his wife called police about an hour later to say he had not returned.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

What Southold Police Did After the Crash

Officers had been checking several nearby restaurants when they were told about the crash. Police said the collision shut down the busy road. Capt. Latham said the crash was serious enough that police closed the road, took measurements and impounded the vehicles for safety checks. Police have not announced any charges.

Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
