Caleb E. Park, 21, of Bushwick, Brooklyn, died in a motorcycle crash on a Van Wyck Expressway ramp in Briarwood on Wednesday, October 21, the NYPD said.

The Crash on the Van Wyck Expressway Ramp

Officers from the 107th Precinct went to the ramp from the Jackie Robinson Parkway to the Van Wyck Expressway after a 911 call at about 6 a.m. They found Park lying on the road. Police said he was riding a 2008 Triumph Street Triple from the eastbound Jackie Robinson Parkway onto the northbound Van Wyck when he hit a cement barrier on the right and was thrown off the motorcycle. EMS crews brought him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, and he died there. Park was a probationary police officer who joined the NYPD in July, and he was on his way to the police academy in College Point.

Where the NYPD Collision Investigation Stands

Police said no one has been arrested. The NYPD Highways District's Collision Investigation Squad is still investigating. PBA President Patrick Hendry said Park died off duty and that the officers who trained with him will remember him.

Once a crash report is finished, the people involved and their families can usually request a copy from the agency that wrote it.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
