How the County Route 51 Crash Unfolded

Police said the collision happened at about 10:26 a.m. Police identified the woman as Lenore M. Nevins, 50. Investigators said she was driving a 2023 Nissan Altima on County Route 51 at a high rate of speed.

According to police, the Altima was making a left turn toward northbound State Route 9W when it moved into the southbound lane and hit a 2016 Hino box truck head-on. Police said Nevins was flown by helicopter to Albany Medical Center in critical condition and later died. The driver of the box truck received treatment at the scene for minor injuries, police said.

Where the State Police Investigation Stands

The crash remains under investigation by New York State Police. Troopers asked anyone with information to contact the State Police Catskill Bureau of Criminal Investigation. No charges have been announced.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
