The Night of the 19th Avenue Crash

Phoenix fire crews got the first call a little after 9 p.m. to the area just north of Thunderbird Road. Police said the driver of a Volvo SUV, 18-year-old Jeffery White, was speeding when the SUV struck the rear of a Dodge pickup waiting in a line of cars behind a bus. The Phoenix Police Department said the impact pushed the vehicle Homer was driving off the roadway, over a sidewalk and into a small brick wall. Homer was taken to a hospital by emergency crews and died there later.

Police said witnesses stopped White as he tried to flee on foot before officers got there. He was taken to a hospital. Three other drivers, men aged 33, 45 and 26, were uninjured and remained at the crash site.

Where the Phoenix Police Investigation Stands

Police said detectives saw signs of impairment in White after the crash. Police said White was arrested and booked into jail on a charge of aggravated assault on an officer. Police said more charges could be added as the investigation continues.

Lab testing for alcohol or drugs often takes several weeks. Charges can follow once those results come back.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Arizona usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
