The Early Morning Crash on East I-65 Service Road

Officers were called to the 1700 block of East I-65 Service Road, near Dean McCrary Mazda, at about 1:44 a.m. Sunday, according to a police news release. Officers found the driver ejected from the vehicle, police said. Mobile Fire and Rescue Department crews gave aid at the scene, and the driver was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver was pronounced dead there a short time later. Police said the vehicle had been heading south on the service road before it left the pavement and hit a concrete culvert.

What Mobile Police Are Still Working On

Mobile police are investigating the crash. The name of the driver will be released after next of kin are notified, according to the police news release. No charges have been announced.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Alabama usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
