What Happened on Imperial Highway

The crash happened at about 5 a.m. on Friday. A vehicle heading west on Imperial Highway hit a freeway support pillar, just past Nash Avenue and close to Los Angeles International Airport. A witness nearby said a loud crash woke him from sleep, and he first thought an earthquake had hit. He went toward the sound and found the vehicle completely on fire. The driver did not survive.

Where the LAPD Investigation Stands

Crews from LAX Fire and the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived and extinguished the flames. The Los Angeles Police Department has taken over the investigation into the collision. The driver's identity has not been released. It is not known whether anyone else was in the vehicle, and no information has been released about the events leading up to the crash.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in California usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
