The Night Crash on Kershaw Camden Highway

Troopers were called to the stretch near Hal Williams Road at about 10:09 p.m. after a report of a deadly wreck. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said a 2019 Toyota sedan was headed north when it left the road on the right side. Officials said the sedan then hit a skid steer and a tree. The sedan's driver died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver's identity has not been released.

Where the Highway Patrol Review Stands

The South Carolina Highway Patrol said investigators are still working to determine the cause. No charges have been announced, and troopers have not released more details about the crash.

Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in South Carolina usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
