The Rollover on Spruce Brook Road

The Berlin Volunteer Fire Department said crews were sent at about 3:59 p.m. to the 500 block of Spruce Brook Road. The call reported a rollover with a person trapped, power lines down and a fire. The fire department said a Berlin police officer who was nearby reached the vehicle and pulled the driver out before flames fully engulfed it.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle. Medics treated the driver at the scene, and the driver was then taken to a hospital in the area with serious injuries. Firefighters put out the fire, which had spread to nearby brush and grass.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Road Closure and Cleanup in Berlin

State environmental officials from the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection assisted crews with clearing hazardous materials from a damaged transformer. Spruce Brook Road was still closed as of 7:30 p.m. while crews repaired utility equipment and cleared hazards from the area. The driver has not been named, and no information has been released about charges.

Serious crash reports note the weather, the lighting and the condition of the road. These are recorded as a matter of routine, whatever happened.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Connecticut usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
