How the Flatrock Road ATV Crash Unfolded

Deputies responded to a call about an ATV accident at 3:59 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of Flatrock Road. Meyer had been riding a Honda 4-wheeler along the roadway. The sheriff's office said evidence at the scene indicated he drove off the road and struck a utility pole beside it, and that he was thrown from the vehicle. Emergency medical crews from Putnam EMS arrived, and Meyer was flown by helicopter to Atrium Health Navicent. The sheriff's office said hospital staff later told authorities that Meyer had died.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office Review

Deputies handled the response at the scene and later received updates from medical staff, the sheriff's office said. The sheriff's office has not released details on what caused the ATV to leave the roadway. No charges have been announced.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Georgia usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
