How the Hualapai Mountains UTV Crash Unfolded

Deputies, Search and Rescue crews and park rangers were called to the area at about 2 p.m. The sheriff's office said a group of UTVs was traveling on a narrow, rocky trail from Soap Canyon toward Hualapai Mountain County Park. The sheriff's office said one of the vehicles left the trail and rolled about 200 feet down a ravine. Because the ground was steep and rugged, responders needed a technical rope system to reach the vehicle. Search and Rescue brought the man's body to the command post.

Updates on a crash investigation tend to come out in pieces, usually through the agency's news releases or social media posts. Long gaps between them are common.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Arizona usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
