How the Main Street Crash in Hurley Unfolded

Troopers responded to the scene just after 6:35 p.m. State Police said an unregistered dirt bike was heading west on Main Street, operated by an 18-year-old with the 17-year-old riding as a passenger. State Police said the bike's operator tried to pass a 2015 Hyundai just as the Hyundai was turning left onto Schoolhouse Lane. The two vehicles collided, and police said both people on the bike were thrown from it. Life-saving measures were given before both were taken to Kingston HealthAlliance Hospital, where the passenger was pronounced dead. By Tuesday afternoon, the 18-year-old was stable, a State Police spokesperson said.

What State Police Are Still Examining in Hurley

The crash remains under investigation, and police have not identified either teenager or the driver of the Hyundai. The Hurley Fire Department, which helped troopers at the scene, said Main Street was shut for five hours. Troopers want to hear from people who know something about the crash and ask them to call the Kingston Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 845-344-5300.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
