How the Queen Anne Road Crash Unfolded

Authorities said the crash happened at about 8:33 p.m. near Maple Street. Responding Bogota police found a 2018 Kia resting on its side. The driver, Yun S. Kang, 71, of Cliffside Park, and the passenger were both trapped inside. Officers freed both men from the car.

The passenger was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, and authorities said he remains in stable condition. Kang was not hurt. Authorities said Kang was heading south when the Kia hit a legally parked, unoccupied vehicle and rolled over onto its side.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the Bogota Investigation Stands

The Bergen County Prosecutor said Kang was arrested the next day and charged with third-degree assault by auto and driving while intoxicated, along with other motor vehicle offenses. Authorities said officers suspected Kang was impaired by alcohol when the crash happened. Because of the passenger's injuries, Bogota police alerted the prosecutor's Major Crimes Unit.

Authorities said detectives and members of the county's fatal accident task force then began a joint investigation. Kang spent time in the Bergen County Jail and made a first appearance in Superior Court in Hackensack. Authorities said the court let him go while his case continues, with more appearances to come.

No one is convicted by an arrest. The court process comes next, and it can take months to reach an outcome.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New Jersey usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
