How the I-69 Truck Crash Unfolded

The collision took place at 9:46 a.m. in Attica Township, on the eastbound side of I-69 just past Lake Pleasant Road. The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office said the truck was in the right lane when it went across the left lane and overturned in the grassy median. The truck was carrying large boulders, and they were thrown from it as it rolled. Some landed on both the eastbound and westbound sides of the interstate, and the truck also leaked fuel. Police identified the driver as Tyler Zellar, 34, and said he was pronounced dead at the scene. No motorist reported damage or injury from the boulders.

What Comes Next in the Lapeer County Investigation

Both directions of I-69 were closed so crews could clear the boulders from the road. Investigators said impairment did not play a part in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.

Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Michigan usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
