Four people were injured in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 23 and County Road 31 near New London on October 31, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

What Happened at Highway 23 and County Road 31

The crash happened at about 8:30 p.m. The State Patrol said a car driven by Aden Kassim, 26, of Willmar was traveling south on Highway 23 when it collided with an SUV driven by Traci Dengerud, 56, of Spicer, which was traveling east on County Road 31. Both drivers were taken to CentraCare Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, and their injuries were described as not life-threatening.

A passenger in Kassim's car, Hasilo Ibrahim, 56, of Willmar, was taken to the same hospital with life-threatening injuries. A passenger in the SUV, Patricia Gislason, 73, of New London, was also taken there, and her injuries were described as not life-threatening. A second SUV passenger, 57-year-old Scott Dengerud of Spicer, was not hurt.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the State Patrol Investigation Stands

The State Patrol said it suspects alcohol played a part in the collision. The patrol said alcohol was a factor for Traci Dengerud and both passengers in her vehicle. The patrol has not announced any charges.

Blood test results from a state lab can take weeks. That is why charges in these cases sometimes come well after the crash.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Minnesota usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
