How the Route 33 Chain Reaction Unfolded

Police said officers were dispatched at 4:44 p.m. to a stretch of Route 33 close to The Cabin restaurant. Howell Township police said a 2001 Jeep Cherokee hit the back of a 2019 Honda Civic that was stopped in traffic. Police said the Honda was shoved into a 2020 Subaru Forester, and the Subaru then struck the back of a 2017 Ford Explorer.

The Jeep's driver, an 18-year-old from Manasquan, and the Honda's driver, a 71-year-old from Point Pleasant, suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital. The 28-year-old Howell resident driving the Subaru was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries. The Ford's 38-year-old driver, also from Howell, was treated at the scene and released.

What Howell Police Are Still Reviewing

The crash remains under investigation, and police have not released the drivers' names. Several local emergency services also sent crews, including EMS units, a first aid squad, paramedics and a fire department. Police asked witnesses to contact Patrolman Michael Silvani at the Howell Township police department.

Video from doorbell cameras, stores and businesses is often gathered early. Many cameras keep footage for only a few days or weeks, so investigators ask quickly.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New Jersey usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
