The Evening Crash on Main Road

The crash happened at about 6:04 p.m. near Port of Egypt Marina. Southold Town police said Tojil-Ambrocio was heading east when a Honda Civic traveling west crossed into his lane and hit him. Police said an officer on the way to the scene saw the badly damaged car leaving the area and stopped it. Tojil-Ambrocio was unresponsive when officers arrived. Rescuers from the Southold Fire Department treated him, and he died after being taken to Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Where the Southold Police Case Stands

Southold Town police said the driver of the Civic, Jose Perez-Perez, 58, who is also from Greenport, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash, a felony. Police said field sobriety tests gave no indication that Perez-Perez was impaired. Crash investigators from the state police helped Southold Town police.

In a hit-and-run, the first weeks are usually about finding the vehicle. Tips and home camera video from neighbors often matter most.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
