How the Expressway Crash Unfolded Near Exit 28

State Police said Tracy was headed west, roughly half a mile from Exit 28, when her car left the toll road and hit the front end of a guardrail. The crash happened at 10:36 a.m. on a Friday. State Police said the car then spun, struck the guardrail a second time and rolled over several times. Tracy was thrown from the car and later died at an area hospital.

Big Sky Aviation, a flight school in Millville, said Tracy had earned her flight instructor certification in May. A friend wrote in a social media post that Tracy had achieved her dream of becoming a pilot.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New Jersey usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
