The Sunday Evening Crash on Van Dyke

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. Police said the ambulance was heading south on Van Dyke with its emergency lights and siren on when a Jeep struck it. Lt. Lamar Kashat said the Jeep was traveling east on Metropolitan Parkway and hit the ambulance on the passenger side, and the ambulance rolled. A staff member in the back of the Aspire Rural Health System ambulance was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries. Police said both drivers had injuries that were not life-threatening. The man who was being transported to care later died at a local hospital.

What the Sterling Heights Police Inquiry Covers

Police said the investigation is active and that officers are still gathering witness information. Lt. Kashat said investigators are still looking at speed, signal colors and the directions of travel, and that the circumstances of the patient's death remain under investigation. Police asked anyone who saw the crash to contact Officer Porter of the Traffic Safety Bureau at the department.

Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Michigan usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
