The Evening Crash on Alabama 17
The collision happened at about 7:25 p.m. on Alabama 17 near the 103 mile marker, about three miles south of Butler. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said a 2010 Honda Odyssey and a 2015 Volvo tractor-trailer collided head-on. The Honda's driver, Colby R. Austin, 36, of Toxey, was killed and was pronounced dead at the scene. The tractor-trailer's driver, Anthony T. Jones, 49, of Jackson, Miss., was hurt and taken to Choctaw General Hospital in Butler. A passenger in the Honda, 22-year-old Derrick W. Gray Jr. of Gaston, S.C., was also hurt, and he was transported to a Meridian, Miss., hospital, Ochsner Rush Medical Center.
Where the ALEA Highway Patrol Investigation Stands
Troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency's Highway Patrol Division are still investigating the crash. The agency has released no further details, and no charges have been announced.
Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.
From an earlier interview. General commentary, not about this crash, and not legal advice.Affected by an accident like this?
Here is what people in Alabama usually need, in the order it comes up.
Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.
Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
