How the Highway 18 Truck Crash Unfolded

The collision happened at about 10:22 a.m. Friday, at an intersection known as Barb's Corner. The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Miesner was driving a 2019 Buick Envision west on Highway 18. The sheriff's office said the other driver, Tadas Mazuolis, 38, of Chicago, was driving a 2019 Peterbilt semi north when the two vehicles collided. Miesner's car ended up wedged beneath the trailer of the semi. Crews had to free her from the wreckage, and she was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. Mazuolis was not injured.

What the Sheriff's Office Reported Afterward

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Mazuolis received a citation for failing to obey a stop or yield sign. The Iowa State Patrol, the Everly and Royal fire departments and Spencer Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
