What Happened on Eastbound Seaway Drive

Officers and firefighters were sent at about 7 a.m. to the eastbound lanes of Seaway Drive near Grand Haven Road. Emergency crews found the pedestrian in the left lane, and the person was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said witnesses told officers that the pedestrian was walking along the highway when several vehicles struck them. Police said witnesses also reported that one of those vehicles may have left without reporting the crash. No other injuries were reported.

Where the Norton Shores Police Search Stands

Police have not made the pedestrian's name public, saying they are still trying to reach next of kin. Police said officers are working to identify and find the vehicle that may have left the scene, and the crash remains under investigation. Police asked anyone with details to contact the Norton Shores Police Department or Silent Observer.

In a hit-and-run, the first weeks are usually about finding the vehicle. Tips and home camera video from neighbors often matter most.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Michigan usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
