A man using a motorized wheelchair was killed in a pedestrian crash at the intersection of Hudson Avenue and Warsaw Street in Rochester on October 27, according to the Rochester Police Department.
The Afternoon Crash at Hudson Avenue
Officers were sent to the intersection at about 3:30 p.m. after reports that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian. Police said the City of Rochester garbage truck was turning left from eastbound Warsaw Street onto Hudson Avenue when it hit the man. Police said the man had been moving north in his wheelchair along the west shoulder of Hudson Avenue. He died at the scene, and officials have not released his identity. Police said the man driving the truck, who is in his 50s, was not hurt.
Where the Rochester Police Investigation Stands
The investigation is ongoing. Investigators said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Mayor Malik Evans issued a statement Tuesday evening offering condolences to the man's family and friends and promising a thorough investigation. Police asked anyone with information or video of the incident to call 911.
Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.
