What Happened on Albany Post Road

Hyde Park police went to the area near Dairy Queen just before 6 p.m. after a report that a woman had been struck by a car. A witness said the pedestrian was launched into the air and came down on a second vehicle. First responders found the woman with serious injuries, gave her triage care and took her to a local hospital for traumatic injuries. Police said the driver of the car stayed at the scene.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

Where the Hyde Park Investigation Stands

Hyde Park police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation, which is ongoing. Investigators from the State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit have also been helping the local department. No charges have been announced, and police have not released the pedestrian's name.

Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your belongings. A damaged bike, phone, or clothes can be part of what insurance pays for.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
