El Paso, TexasPublished 1 min read

Lydia Burrola, 54, of San Elizario, was killed in a car crash in the 11900 block of Socorro Road in El Paso on November 1, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The Early Morning Crash on Socorro Road

The crash happened at around 6:28 a.m. on Sunday. The Sheriff's Office said Burrola was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck when it collided head-on with a Ford Bronco. The Sheriff's Office said the Bronco was driven by Daniel Martinez, 61, who was accused of crossing into oncoming traffic. Burrola died in the crash. San Elizario Fire Rescue said a stretch of Socorro Road was closed beginning near Thompson Road, and officials asked drivers to find other routes.

El Paso County Sheriff's Office Continues Investigation

The Sheriff's Office said Martinez was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. Jail records show he was booked into the El Paso County downtown jail, and he remained in jail Monday morning. The Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing, and Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said his thoughts are with Burrola's family.

An arrest at the scene is often only the first step. Formal charges are usually decided later by prosecutors.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
