How the Pierce Avenue Crash Unfolded

The crash happened about 12:40 a.m. Saturday. Koenig was driving north in a 2020 Chevrolet Trax. The O'Brien County Sheriff's Office said Koenig reported that a deer ran in front of her and she swerved to avoid it. Her vehicle went into the west ditch and rolled once before stopping on its wheels. A deputy took Koenig to Sanford Sheldon Medical Center. The vehicle was totaled.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

What the O'Brien County Sheriff's Office Reported

The sheriff's office said Koenig received three citations. The sheriff's office said they were for having no registration card or plate on the vehicle, for driving while her license was not valid and for not showing proof of liability insurance. No other vehicles or people were reported involved in the crash.

When police say a crash is still under investigation, it usually means they are still collecting evidence and have not reached any conclusions.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
