The Early Friday Crash on 37th Street

The crash happened shortly before 1 a.m. Friday where 37th Street meets Drayton Street. The Georgia State Patrol said a Savannah police patrol car was traveling west on 37th while a Ford Escape was traveling north on Drayton. The patrol said the police car hit the Ford on its passenger side. Mayor Van Johnson said the patrol car's emergency equipment was on when the collision happened. The Georgia State Patrol confirmed that, but said it was unclear when the equipment was switched on. A fence and the brickwork on a nearby house were damaged.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

What the Georgia State Patrol Is Reviewing

The Georgia State Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash. Mayor Johnson said the city does not investigate its own vehicles and described the matter as under active investigation. He offered no further details about the inquiry. The official incident report has not been made public.

A full investigation into a serious crash often takes weeks, and sometimes months. Investigators usually wait for vehicle data and lab results before they finish their report.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Georgia usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
