How the I-40 Truck Crash Unfolded

Emergency calls came in shortly before 6:45 a.m. for a head-on collision near mile marker 267 on I-40 West. The Tennessee Highway Patrol said a 2017 Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling east when it swerved left to avoid a slowing vehicle ahead. The patrol said the Mitsubishi then crossed the median into the westbound lanes and struck a 2017 Mack dump truck and a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Officials said the dump truck came to rest on its side on the right shoulder, and its gravel load covered the westbound exit ramp for the Buffalo Valley rest area.

The patrol said the 23-year-old Mitsubishi driver, a child in that car and the 66-year-old dump truck driver were hurt. The Smith County Rescue Squad described all of the injuries as minor. No injuries were reported among the five people in the Jeep, who are from Arkansas. Officials said everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt.

What the Tennessee Highway Patrol Has Said So Far

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said charges are pending against the 23-year-old Mitsubishi driver. No additional details have been released. Along with the rescue squad, crews from the New Middleton Fire Department, the Smith County Ambulance Service and local law enforcement responded to the scene.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Tennessee usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
