What Happened West of Hoxey Road on Illinois 140
Troopers responded at about 5:43 p.m. to the crash west of Hoxey Road. Illinois State Police said the truck, driven by Garret C. Miller, 30, of Highland, crossed into the opposite lanes and struck a sedan head-on. The sedan's driver, Justina Tennikait, 65, of Bethalto, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her mother, Sharon Powell, 84, also of Bethalto, died at a local hospital. Miller was also hospitalized with injuries. A relative said the two women had left a family member's apartment and were heading home when the crash happened.
Where the Madison County Case Stands
Madison County prosecutors charged Miller with two felony counts each of aggravated DUI resulting in death and reckless homicide. Family members of the two women were in an Edwardsville courtroom on Wednesday for Miller's appearance. A relative said they were thankful for the charges.
An arrest is not a conviction. The case moves through the courts, and the full process can take many months.

Here is what families in Illinois usually need, in the order it comes up.
Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
