How the Dubuque Road Crash Unfolded

Deputies were sent to the intersection at about 6:19 a.m. Thursday after reports of a crash. Sheriff Nathan Neff said Matthew McMahon, of Raymond, was driving a Chevy Traverse east on Dubuque Road. Neff said deputies allege the Traverse did not stop at the intersection and struck a Buick Enclave driven by Kimberle Bellendier-Oliver, of Lakeland, Fla.

A third person in the Buick, who has not been identified, was also hurt. McMahon, Bellendier-Oliver and the third person were taken to MercyOne Hospital with injuries the sheriff's office described as non-life threatening.

What Comes Next for the Sheriff's Office Review

The sheriff's office has not described the injuries in detail. Officials have not announced any charges.

People often hear very little from investigators in the first days after a crash. That quiet is normal while evidence is gathered, and it does not mean the case has stalled.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in Iowa usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
