The Evening Collision on SR-24 Near Morrier Lane
The crash happened around 6:14 p.m. near Morrier Lane and involved a pickup and two semi-trucks, each pulling two trailers. The Washington State Patrol said the eastbound Chevrolet Silverado moved into oncoming traffic and struck a westbound Volvo semi-truck. The patrol said a Peterbilt semi-truck then hit the pickup.
The passenger, Jamaica Castro, 32, of Wapato, was killed and died at the scene. The pickup's driver, Cristian M. González, 35, was hurt and taken to MultiCare Yakima Memorial Hospital. The Peterbilt driver, Jaime Contreras, 46, of Wapato, was also taken to the Yakima hospital. The Volvo driver was not hurt.
What the Washington State Patrol Is Still Examining
The Washington State Patrol said investigators ruled out intoxicants as a factor. The patrol said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The patrol said charges are pending against the pickup's driver.
Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.
