The motorcyclist has been identified as Jeffrey Tyler Robertson, 35, of Troutman, who died at the scene on Interstate 77.
Jeffrey Tyler Robertson, 35, of Troutman, was killed in a motorcycle crash on Interstate 77 in Iredell County on October 29, according to the State Highway Patrol.
The Early Morning Sequence on I-77
Troopers were called to the scene near the Langtree Road exit a little after 6 a.m. He was heading south in the toll lane on a 2004 Kawasaki cruiser-style motorcycle. The State Highway Patrol said the motorcycle had a tire failure, went out of control and overturned. Robertson was separated from the motorcycle, the patrol said. The patrol said the motorcycle kept traveling and was then struck by a tractor-trailer. Robertson remained in the southbound toll lane, where the patrol said a 2020 Chevrolet SUV struck him. He died at the scene.
Where the Highway Patrol Investigation Stands
The investigation is ongoing, and the State Highway Patrol said no charges had been filed as of Thursday night. The patrol said the crash was first suspected to involve a hit-and-run driver. It said reviews of toll lane video, the tractor-trailer's dash camera and other sources showed no sign that any other vehicle was involved. Troopers asked anyone who may have seen the crash and has not yet spoken to law enforcement to reach the patrol's communications center in Newton.
Investigators write down the weather, lighting and road surface after every serious crash. Recording those details is routine and does not point to any single cause.
