How the FM-1810 Car Crash Unfolded

The collision happened at about 6:30 p.m. on FM-1810 at the entrance to P&K Stone, east of Chico. Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said a Dodge Ram 1500 and a small passenger car were involved, and both vehicles had major damage. Crews had to free patients from the wreckage. The two elderly people in the car, Linda Thweatt and Mack Thweatt, both of Alvord, were critically injured. A helicopter flew Mack Thweatt to Medical City Denton, and another flew Linda Thweatt to a Fort Worth hospital. Both later died. A child who was also in the car had serious injuries and went to Medical City Decatur by ground ambulance. Preuninger said two adult women in the truck were also taken to Medical City Decatur with serious injuries. Mack Thweatt had been a teacher and coach in the Alvord school district. He later worked as a newspaper photographer and copy editor, and he and Linda Thweatt had been married for more than 50 years.

What Is Known After the Chico Response

The Wise County Sheriff's Office and the Texas Department of Public Safety were among the agencies that responded. The road was shut down after the crash. No charges have been announced, and no crash report has been released.

Roads are often closed for hours after a serious crash so investigators can measure and photograph the scene before anything is moved.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Texas usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
