How the Sunrise Highway Crash Unfolded

The crash happened at about 2:48 p.m. Detectives said Rodriguez was crossing Sunrise Highway northbound when a 2026 BMW X3 struck him. Police said a woman was driving the BMW southbound on Wantagh Avenue and was turning left onto Sunrise Highway at the time. Rodriguez was rushed to a nearby hospital and died there. According to investigators, the driver stayed at the scene.

Where the Nassau County Homicide Squad Probe Stands

Detectives with the Nassau County Police Homicide Squad are looking into what happened. No charges had been announced as of Thursday evening. The investigation is ongoing.

Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
