How the Route 20 Intersection Crash Unfolded

Officers were sent to the intersection at about 10:41 a.m. on Thursday. Sheriffs said a 1988 Ford Ranger driven by the 17-year-old was southbound on Madison Street and stopped at the stop sign. Sheriffs said the juvenile then tried to cross Route 20 toward Newberry Road. The other driver, Stephen Fitch, 73, of Bridgewater, was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on Route 20, and the two vehicles collided in the intersection.

The juvenile was taken to Hamilton Hospital after being evaluated by first responders. Fitch and the passenger were taken to Wynn Hospital for further evaluation. Sheriffs said all three had non-life-threatening injuries.

Help for people affected by a crash is below.

What the Oneida County Sheriff Reported After the Crash

The sheriff's office said it issued the juvenile a citation for not yielding at a stop sign, returnable to Sangerfield Town Court. Blueline Towing, Main Street Auto Care, COCVAC, the Waterville Volunteer Fire Department and the New York State Department of Transportation also helped at the scene. Multiple COCVAC units took the injured to the hospitals.

Police usually wait to release the names of the people involved until their families have been told. That is why names often come out a day or more later.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
