Shirley, New YorkPublished 1 min read

Three people were injured in a two-car crash on River Road in Shirley on Oct. 30, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

How the River Road Collision Unfolded

The crash happened at about 8 a.m. on Friday. Police said an on-duty sergeant, driving an unmarked car southbound on River Road, tried to turn left onto Victory Avenue and collided with a 2026 Honda CR-V traveling westbound. The sergeant, whose name has not been released, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

The driver of the Honda has been identified as Kenia Castillo Canales, 25, of Shirley. Her son, Zayn Freeman, 3, was a passenger. Both had minor injuries and were treated at the same hospital as the sergeant.

What Comes Next for Suffolk Police Detectives

Police said detectives from the department's Major Case Unit are looking into the crash. Both vehicles were taken by police for a safety inspection. Police asked anyone with information to call Major Case Unit detectives at 631-852-6555.

Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Affected by an accident like this?

Here is what people in New York usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Emergency care. Emergency rooms must check and stabilize you, even if you can't pay. The bill comes later.

  2. Your vehicle. Tow yards usually charge for every day a towed vehicle sits there.

  3. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  4. Hospital bills. Most hospitals have a program that cuts bills for people with low income, and you can apply months after the first bill.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
