Oregon State Police identified the drivers as Scott Charles Caldwell, 55, of Adams, and Curtis William Gammond, 54, of Pendleton, who both died at the scene on Highway 204.
Two log truck drivers, Scott Charles Caldwell, 55, of Adams, and Curtis William Gammond, 54, of Pendleton, were killed in a two-truck crash on Highway 204 in Union County on October 26, according to Oregon State Police. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
How the Highway 204 Truck Crash Unfolded
Troopers responded at about 5:54 a.m. on Monday near milepost 36.5, near Elgin. Oregon State Police said an unloaded Kenworth log truck driven by Caldwell was heading west and a fully loaded Kenworth log truck driven by Gammond was heading east when the two collided. A fire broke out after the crash, police said.
Oregon State Police Lead the Investigation
The highway was affected for about seven hours while troopers carried out the on-scene investigation. The La Grande Fire Department, Elgin Rural Fire Department and Oregon Department of Transportation assisted Oregon State Police. Police called the investigation preliminary, and no charges have been announced.
Investigators work quickly at the scene because marks on the road and other evidence fade fast. Much of the slower work happens later, away from the scene.

Here is what families in Oregon usually need, in the order it comes up.
Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
