Pedestrian Killed in Nash County Accident
A 14-year-old Southern Nash High School student died at a hospital roughly two hours after being struck on Bryant Road early Tuesday.
A 14-year-old girl was killed in a pedestrian crash on Bryant Road in Nash County on November 3, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
What Happened on Bryant Road Near Hoyt Road
Troopers said the collision happened at about 6 a.m., close to Hoyt Road and just east of N.C. 231, roughly 3 miles north of Middlesex. The Highway Patrol said the girl was standing at a private driveway to catch her school bus. The patrol said the bus came up with its amber lights flashing, but its stop sign was not extended when she stepped onto the road.
A westbound 2014 Chevy Silverado struck her, the patrol said. She was taken to WakeMed in Raleigh and died there about two hours after the crash. She attended Southern Nash High School, and the school district asked that her family's privacy be respected.
Where the Highway Patrol Investigation Stands
The Highway Patrol is investigating. By late Tuesday morning, no charges had been filed against the driver of the pickup. The school bus camera recorded video of the incident. Nash County Public Schools said a debriefing team for traumatic events was at the high school Tuesday and would continue to be available to students over the coming days.
Investigators often ask nearby homes and businesses for camera video soon after a crash. Many systems record over old footage after a few days or weeks, so they move fast.

Here is what families in North Carolina usually need, in the order it comes up.
Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
