Rider Killed in Douglas County ATV Accident
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office identified the rider as Austin Anthony Durrett, 31, of Portland, who died in a crash at the Umpqua Dunes National Recreation Area.
Austin Anthony Durrett, 31, of Portland, was killed in an ATV crash in the Umpqua Dunes National Recreation Area of Douglas County on November 1, according to the county sheriff's office.
The Afternoon Crash at Umpqua Dunes
A 911 call came in shortly after 4:30 p.m. about an injured rider near Third Finger, a section of the dunes. The sheriff's office said deputies found Durrett, who was operating the ATV, unresponsive and not breathing. Medical responders declared him dead where he was found.
The sheriff's office said he was part of a group riding near Fourth Finger. It said he set out from a spot called Lake Shot to look for a companion whose machine had run out of fuel. The sheriff's office said that when he did not come back, others in the group searched and located him about 45 minutes later. The sheriff's office said early findings indicate he went over a razorback dune about 40 feet high at high speed, and the ATV was airborne before it landed.
What the Sheriff's Office Investigation Involves
The sheriff's office said the crash is still under investigation and gave no further details. The Douglas County Medical Examiner's Office has been told of the death and is looking into it. Durrett's family has been informed.
Many newer cars keep a short record of the moments around a crash. Investigators may download that data, and making sense of it can take weeks.

Here is what families in Oregon usually need, in the order it comes up.
Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.
Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.
Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.
Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.
Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
