What Happened on East Dundee Road

Police said officers were sent to the area shortly before 4 a.m. and found a black Nissan Altima against a utility pole and a tree, close to the northeast corner of the intersection. The man was the driver and the only person in the car. Police said he died at the scene. Police said a witness had seen the car sitting in an eastbound turn lane at the North Hicks Road corner, and it later drove east on the side of Dundee Road meant for westbound traffic. According to police, that witness did not see the collision itself.

Where the Palatine Police Investigation Stands

Palatine police are still investigating the crash. Police said the man's name is not being released yet because his family needs time to tell other relatives. The Cook County medical examiner's office is responsible for determining how and why he died. Parts of Dundee Road were shut down during the investigation, and every lane was open again by about 9 a.m.

Which agency investigates often depends on where the crash happened. Highway crashes are often handled by state police or highway patrol, and crashes on city streets by local officers.

Lost someone in a crash like this?

Here is what families in Illinois usually need, in the order it comes up.

  1. Death certificates. The funeral home or the family can order them, and banks and insurers each usually want a copy.

  2. Crash report. The crash report is usually ready a few weeks after the crash, and you can still get it later.

  3. Funeral costs. Every state has a victim fund that pays funeral costs after some crashes, and the fund decides who qualifies.

  4. Survivor payments. If the person who died had worked, their spouse or children may get monthly Social Security payments. Applying early matters.

  5. Insurance offer. You can turn down the insurer's first offer and ask for more.
